Have you been in the automotive industry for a while and would like to move on up to management? Or do you have a sense for business and a love for the automotive industry. Whichever the case, sounds like an automotive management job could be for you. Before you jump straight in to becoming a manager in the automotive industry, it’s important to realize that there are different types of managers needed in the industry. One type of manager in the automotive industry is the Manufacturing Manager. A Manufacturing Manager usually requires a 4-year degree. Most of the time they degree needs to be on a technical path. A manufacturing manager needs to possess the ability to be a strong leader and handle a plethora of diverse duties including being able to have sound skills in budget planning and management, production and scheduling and handle employee complaints and disagreements in a professional and sound manner. A manufacturing manager is the hub of the manufacturing facility. They coordinate activities in the plant using their supervisors and employees to produce a product in a productive manner. Most managers are in charge of a staff including but not limited to supervisors, technicians, and engineers. A second type of manager job in the automotive industry is a Program Manager. A Program Manager mostly requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Their general responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring timely scheduled delivery of new automotive products, Designing and manufacturing with a program team, working with automotive production programs and the ability to plan all aspects of phased engineering, and dealing with product cycles from development through the production transition and support. These are just a few of the opportunities available in automotive management. If you are interesting in pursuing a career in this field, you might want to check with your local college and inquire about what programs are offered and what you could become employed as when you graduate. It would also be a good idea to periodically check the classifieds section of the newspaper and keep a mental or written note of the jobs available in the automotive management industry before applying to the collegiate program. Think about what skills you possess and what assets you can bring to the table before selecting a course of study or applying for that job.
